The twins were not asked
In November 2018 a scientist announced that two babies had been born with edited genomes. The downside was not his.

What they knew
- Germline editing would be inherited.
- Off-target effects could not be ruled out in advance.
- International statements had called heritable editing irresponsible at this stage.
What they could not know
- What the edits had actually done in those two bodies.
- What their lives would be as data.
- What a court, later, would do with him. which is not the same unknown as theirs.
What was at stake
Two children, their possible descendants, and a precedent. He’s career was also on the table. Those are not similar stakes.
The next move
He announced. The summit condemned. Chinese authorities investigated. In December 2019 a Shenzhen court sentenced him to three years in prison for illegal medical practice. He was released in 2022. The children remain, with identities the press nicknamed and this Guide will not decorate.
The situation
He Jiankui told the Second International Summit on Human Genome Editing that he had used CRISPR-Cas9 to edit CCR5 in human embryos, and that two girls had been born. The stated aim was resistance to HIV. The children had not consented. The field had not agreed this was care.
Risk ethics is the point. Who chose, who could not choose, and who will live inside the unknown. A founder on a pad and a child in a clinic are not examples of the same courage.
Stopping would have been the orientation. Continuing was the act. The later prison sentence is not the children’s remedy.
What they had
- A tool that worked well enough to wound
- A conference
- No clinical necessity that the twins had chosen
What didn’t work
The claim that this was therapy. The claim that importance to a scientist is importance enough.
What happened
The births are real. The long medical ending is not in. A happy scientific first would still have been an ethics failure. This Guide includes the story so that DON’T PANIC cannot be mistaken for permission.
