Our 42
On 24 August 2026 the address dontpanic.grok.me returned 404. No GitHub repository of that name existed under Bookof42. A Guide was built anyway, and tried not to invent a past.

The paper is blank. Notice that before any number is offered.
By August 2026 the Bookof42 GitHub organization already held siblings with public faces: The Book of 42, Know With, With Love, the Inner House, Soul’s Quest, Rather, The Meaning of Life, Field 69, MythEngine. Stars was a question more than a confirmed live sibling. DON’T PANIC was a 404. This plate is project history, not a night.
What they knew
- Adams’s 42 is a joke from 1978, later refused as a cipher.
- The Book of 42 treats the number as an aperture, not a verdict.
- The Meaning of Life keeps the Question in play.
- A search of the organization found no dontpanic repository.
What they could not know
- Whether a prior DON’T PANIC had existed and been withdrawn.
- What a new Guide would do to the others if it borrowed their 42 without their chronology.
- Whether forty-two stories would be enough to be a corpus rather than a list.
Project history is not Adams scholarship. 42 does not mean DON’T PANIC. They share a literary universe, and later a constellation that kept asking questions anyway. Know With asked how we know. With Love asked how the heart has tried to speak. This Guide asks what people actually do while the answer is not in hand.
The joke is allowed. A Guide named after an instruction not to panic, built on the day a 404 was found, counting to forty-two on purpose, publishing at 6:42 as play. That is absurdity in the older sense: out of tune with a sober brand meeting. It is also a method. Play belongs in the philosophy, not in a streak counter.
Three phrases. Named methods. One integer. GAME does not light. A miss is drawn as carefully as a hit.

I don’t know what’s going on, but these certain numbers just seem to be recurring all the time.Elon Musk to Everyday Astronaut, Starbase. Later noticing is not founding evidence, and not a decryption.
He also asked whether he was an avatar in someone’s game. MythEngine held the question. The Inner House said we know in part. This Guide says: I don’t know. Don’t panic.
The answer can be absurd. The question can still be worth asking.
What was at stake
A literary identity that could easily become costume. Hitchhiker trade dress was forbidden for a reason.
The next move
Found this Guide on 24 August 2026. Editorial time 6:42, documented as play. Write true stories of what humans do when the ending is still open. A mythology the commits do not support is not backdated.
