play

motion with room to try another move

What the gloss loses

“Game” is not a synonym. Games have rules, scores, winners. Play can include those, and can also include leaving the table. Life is not literally a game.

Etymology

Old English plegian, to exercise, to frolic, to perform music. The noun later covers drama, games, and freedom of movement in a mechanism (“play in the wheel”).

History

This Guide treats play as a serious editorial territory: experiment, variation, absurdity, the next possible move. It will not gamify the reader.
